Koontz, 84, of Stoystown, died Oct. 24, 2003 at Somerset Hospital. Born Sept. 7, 1919 in Stoystown, son of Thomas E. and Mary (Smith) Koontz. Preceded in death by parents, brother Donald E. and sister Phyllis Stutzman. Survived by his wife of 62 years, the former Emily Custer; children, Kay, married to Thomas Hansen of Ellsworth, Maine, Donald F. of Somerset, Suzanne, married to David Merringer of Stoystown and Joan of Menlo Park, Calif.; grandchildren: Jason Merringer, Jill Kalaha and Jared Hansen; and great-grandchildren: Tasha and Tess Merringer. Graduate of Stoystown High School. World War II Navy veteran. Former owner of Koontz's Economy Market and Thomas E. Koontz and Sons Wholesale Meats, both of Stoystown. Retired from H.J. Specht and Son Hardware, Stoystown. Member of Grace Lutheran Church, Stoystown, where he had served on Congregation Council and Social Ministry Committee and was longtime Sunday school superintendent and teacher. Life member of Robert P. Hite Post 257 American Legion, Stoystown. Member of Forbes Area Senior Citizens, Stoyestown Area Historical Society, T.P.A. and Somerset Lodge, I.O.O.F. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Deaner Funeral Home, Stoystown. Viewing from 10 a.m. until service at 11, a.m. Tuesday, at Grace Lutheran Church, Stoystown. Rev. Walter L. Startzel officiating. Interment, Odd Fellows Cemetery, Stoystown. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to Grace Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 336, Stoystown, Pa. 15563.
