Kowaleski, 85, Clearfield, formerly of Somerset, died on Oct. 12, 2004, at Riverside Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He was born Feb. 22, 1919, in Mount Pleasant, a son of the late Lewis and Sophie Kowaleski. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six sisters and six brothers. He is survived by two children Richard J. Kowalewski and wife Sherry, Warsaw, Ohio; Judy Zazworsky and husband Lee, Granville, Ohio; six grandchildren Richard Kowalewski Jr. and wife Julie, Florence, Ky.; Sean, Ryan and Kevin Kowalewski, all of Warsaw, Ohio; David and Jessica Zazworsky, both of Atlanta, Ga. He retired in March of 1984 from the Federal Bureau of Mines. He was self-employed in the coal mine business in Somerset. He served with the U.S. Army Ninth Division during World War II having attained the rank of staff sergeant. He was involved in the Invasion of Normandy in June of 1944 and earned two bronze stars and several ribbons. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, Clearfield, the Clearfield American Legion John Lewis Shade Post 6 and the F. Michael Sicks Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1785 of Clearfield. Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield. A Christian vigil service will be recited at the funeral home on Friday at 3:45 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be said 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Catholic Church, Clearfield. The Rev. Monsignor Henry L. Krebs celebrant. Committal services and interment will be at 2 p.m. in the Somerset County Memorial Park, Somerset. Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the members of the Somerset County Honor Guard. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made the Clearfield Senior Citizens Center, 103 North Front Street, Clearfield.
