A. S. Kresge Passed Away Sunday - Remains Buried at Reading Rev. Alfred Schick Kresge, 85, a retired minister of the Evangelical and Reformed Church and one of Southern Somerset County's best known citizens, died Sunday at his home here. Death followed an illness of several weeks. Rev. Kresge had a record of more than 50 years in the pulpit. He was a son of Michael and Sarah (Schick) Kresge and was born in Stroudsburg on August 10, 1855. He attended Pleasant Valley Academy and following his graduation became a school teacher. He followed this profession for several years and in 1886 entered the military. Rev. Kresge was ordained in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the Evangelical Church. He served charges in White Haren, Reading, Catasauqua, Leighton, Shamokin and Williamsport. After a service record of 25 years in the ministry of the Evangelical denomination, he was received into the Reformed Church by the Iowa Classis. He served charges in Conesville, Ia., and Plymouth, Ind. After returning to Pennsylvania Rev. Kresge served the Wills Creek and Hyndman charges of the Evangelical and Reformed Church in Somerset County. Following his retirement in 1930, he was frequently called back into the ministry. At one time he served as supply pastor in Rockwood, and had substituted in a number of churches in this section during the past few years. Only recently he filled the pulpit of the Meyersdale church during the illness of the regular pastor, Rev. Nelson C. Brown. The deceased had served as president of the Somerset Classis of the Reformed Church on two occasions. He also was general secretary of the Sunday School Association of the Somerset Classis. Rev. Kresge was married three times. His first wife passed away 35 years ago. His second wife, Mrs. Alice Elizabeth (Grier) Kresge, died five years ago. Surviving are his third wife, Mrs. Eva (Ford) Kresge, and these children, all born to the first union: Mrs. Theresa Crouthamel, Johnson City, N.J.; Mrs. Charles Bowman, Allentown; Mrs. George Knieriem, Beaver; Mrs. Sara Hazel Cox, Ephrata, and Rev. Seward R. Kresge, Lewistown, Md. Funeral services were conducted at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in the Amity Evangelical and Reformed Church by Rev. Nelson C. Brown, pastor, and Rev. B. A. Black, D.D., former pastor, who gave a fitting sermon and eulogy, having been associated with Rev. Kresge for many years. Rev. J. E. Gindlesperger of Wills Creek charge offered a prayer. The remains were taken to the church at noon. Interment was in the Charles Evans Cemetery in Reading on Wednesday, R. Reich & Son, Meyersdale morticians, were in charge of funeral arrangements.
