Elk Lick Township lost a splendid citizen on March 19th when Jeremiah M. Kretchman succumbed to a malignant disease which caused him much suffering during the last few years of his life. He bore his affliction patiently, however, and maintained a cheerful and optimistic demeanor until the end. Jeremiah M. Kretchman was a son of the late Manasses Kretchman, he was born in Elk Lick Township in 1859 and lived in the neighborhood of this birthplace practically all of his life. He was aged 66 years, 10 months and 14 days at the time of his death. In his young manhood, Mr. Kretchman taught school successfully, a number of years. On August 3, 1890, he was united in marriage with Miss Minnie Smalley of Salisbury, and settled down to farming, which was his occupation the remainder of his life. He was a man of more than average intelligence and affable disposition, a good companion and a good neighbor. He was public-spirited and took an active interest in the affairs of the community in which he lived. During his last active years he was the fire warden of his district. Three sons and four daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Kretchman, namely: Alvin, of Windber, a World War veteran; Mrs. Florence Lehman of York, Pa.; Mrs. Mae Burkholder, Summit Mills; Mrs. Emma Glotfelty, Meyersdale; Ellis and Blance at home, and Ray, who preceded his father in death. Sigler, Interment followed in St. Paul cemetery.
