Born April 29, 1923, in Hunker, he is the son of the late Louis and Mary (Frederick) Kubina. He is preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, George Staschak; son, John L. Kubina Jr; grandchildren, John Kershner and Susan Spangler; son-in-law, Marvin Kershner; half brother, George Staschak; stepbrother, William Staschak; and stepsisters, Pearl Staschak, Mary Frederick, and Margaret Zachetti. He is survived by his wife of 60 years whom he married on Oct. 12, 1946, Catherine (Mayernik) Kubina; daughters Virginia Mertz and husband John, Falling Waters, W. Va., and Kathryn Kershner, Hagerstown, Md.; son, Guy Kubina and his wife, Sara, Sheridan, Ind.; grandchildren, David and Sally Kershner, Gina Householder and husband Craig, and Margaret, Jonathan, Samuel, and Rachel Kubina; great-grandchildren, Corey and Carinna Householder; sisters, Mary Countryman, Somerset, Margaret Zemba, Youngwood, and Helen Streno, Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; and stepsisters Irene Foschia, Greensburg, and Teresa Zozula, Carnegie. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy in World War II, serving aboard the SS. Josiah Park, SS. Marine Ravin, and the USS Springfield. He won a Presidential Unit Citation, a European-African-Middle Eastern-Campaign Medal, an Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 2 stars, a Phillippine Liberation Ribbon, and a World War II Victory Medal. He was employed by Tomaco Coal Co. for several years, and then worked as a set-up operator at Mack Trucks for 23 years. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, golfing, fishing, and spending time with his family. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home, Somerset. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Somerset. Monsignor Samuel Tomaselli celebrant. Interment with full military honors at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Jeanette. A vigil for the deceased will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
