Landis, 85, Central City, left Earth for Heaven Sept. 16, 2004. Born June 2, 1919, in Central City the son of Harry K. and Elizabeth (Ackerman) Landis. Preceded in death by parents; brother, Jack; sisters, Ruth Gordon and Louise Klages. Survived by wife of 58 years, the former Eleanor Whited; daughter, Mary Ann, wife of John Holbrook, Sewickley; stepgrandchildren: Jason, Virginia, Danny, Camille; brother, Jeff, Florida; sisters, Elma Koch, Central City; Fay Jones, Irwin; Bernice Lenhart, Fla. Also survived by a number of nieces and nephews and dear in-laws. A 1937 graduate of Shade High School, a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran. A veteran of World War II, serving both in Northern Africa and France. After the war, Frank worked as a bricklayer while attending the University of Pittsburgh, graduating in 1954 with a major in French. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa Fraternity. After graduation, Frank received a Fullbright Scholarship to study at the University of Dijon. Leaving with his wife and baby daughter, he continued his education and renewed many wartime friendships in France. After returning home, Frank taught briefly at local high schools. Before becoming a professor of French at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, retiring in 1978. After retirement he and Eleanor traveled extensively and along with an "Army buddy" organized reunions for fighter group 314. He was an active member of Graef Lutheran Church and served as a Sunday school teacher and on parish council. A member of American Legion Post 449, Shade Lions Club and the New Paris Marching Band, which gave him the opportunity to renew his love of music. Friends will be received 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Mulcahy Funeral Home, and from 1 p.m. until time of service at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Graef Lutheran Church, Cairnbrook. The Rev. James A. McCormick Jr. officiating. Interment Daley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Graef Lutheran Church of the music program at Old Economy Village, Ambridge, Pa.
