Lane Laid to Rest in His Native Soil Funeral of Air Crash Victim at Berlin and Burial at Mt. Lebanon The body of Sgt. Charles H. Lane, one of eight men constituting the crew of a heavy Army bomber, who were killed when the big aircraft crashed at Moses Lake, State of Washington, as reported in last week's Republican, was laid to rest with military honors in his native soil at Mount Lebanon, Northampton Township, Tuesday afternoon. The body was shipped from a far western Army post last Thursday night, accompanied by a military escort. It arrived at Meyersdale Monday morning and was taken immediately from here to the home of an aunt of the unfortunate young man, who lives in the old Lane family homestead at 222 Main Street, Berlin, where funeral rites were conducted at 2 p.m., Tuesday, by Rev. J. E. Gindlesperger, pastor of Mt. Lebanon Evangelical and Reformed Church, assisted by Revs. Harry Greer, Robert F. Nagle and C. W. Railey. Many citizens of Berlin and surrounding country called at the Lane homestead while the body lay in state there, until the hour of the funeral, to pay their respect and condole with the bereaved relatives who had gathered there. Several hundred attended the funeral services and followed the remains to Mt. Lebanon cemetery for interment. The crowd in attendance at the cemetery was estimated to number about 750, nearly the entire population of Northampton Township apparently having turned out to show their respect for the gallant young war victim and his family. Harry F. Fisher Post, American Legion, of Berlin, had charge of the impressive burial ceremonies. Johnson & Son, Berlin funeral directors, had charge of the burial arrangements. Much sympathy was expressed for the parents of the victim of the tragedy, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Lane, who have two other sons in the armed forces of our country - Sgt. Walter L. Lane, with a bombing squadron at the Lakeland, Florida, Army airfield, and Pvt. Harry C. Lane, in a tank battalion at Camp Campbell, Kentucky. Both arrived in time to attend their brother's obsequies. Sgt. Charles H. Lane was a nephew of Sgt. Alvey Martz of World War I fame, and a grandson of A. L. Martz, prominent aged citizen of Northampton Township. The Martz and Lane families are held in high esteem by all who know them. For generations their record as loyal, patriotic and law-abiding citizens has been unexcelled. Meyersdale Republican, July 1, 1943
