All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/somerset/ _______________________________________________ ROBERT HAY LANE March 30, 1922 - April 2, 2003 Robert Hay Lane, 81, formerly of Berlin, passed away in Hobbs, NM on Wednesday, April 2, 2003. Robert was born in the family home on South Street on March 30, 1922 to George Franklin Lane (1891-1937) and Erma Hay Lane (1888-1984). He was the great-great-great-grandson of Pioneer Simon Hay who settled in Somerset County from Germany in about 1767. Robert had an older brother, George Franklin Lane, Jr., who preceded him in death in 1976. Funeral services were April 5 with burial in Socorro Cemetery in New Mexico. He graduated from Berlin Brothersvalley High School where he was editor of the yearbook, on the basketball team, and played in the Fife and Drum Corps. In 1940, he left Berlin to attend New Mexico School of Mining and Technology in Socorro. His education was interrupted to serve in the United States Air Force during World War II where he proudly served his country in France and Italy. He was a Staff Sergeant with the Bomb Maintenance Tech 683 of the 1257th Army Air Force and the 484th Bomb Group. After his honorable discharge he graduated with degrees in Mining Engineering and Geology. He worked in potash mines in Carlsbad and Hobbs, and Canada, and then retired from Kerr-McGee Potash Company in 1992. He was active in the Masonic Lodge, Shrine Clowns, a member of the Presbyterian Church, American Legion, VFW Post 3274, and Fraternal Order of Eagles. He loved gardening, hunting, fishing, attending professional golf tournaments, and building radio controlled model airplanes. In later years, he won many ribbons in the county and state fairs for his needlework (long stitch and embroidery). Robert married Catherine Clarke on September 14, 1948 in Socorro. She preceded him in death in 1993. He is survived by four children (and their spouses): Robert Clarke Lane of Coppell, Texas; Martha Lane of Albuquerque, NM; Barbara Lane of Hobbs; and Clare Lane Nickel of Abilene, Texas; and six grandchildren. He was a devoted father as well as a loving and generous grandfather. He is survived locally by cousin Donald W. Hay of Berlin. The New Republic, April 24, 2003 [L0224-L0225]
