Born Feb. 24, 1919, in Jefferson Township, a son of John Wesley and Margaret Ellen (Uphouse) Lavan. Preceded in death by parents; wife, the former Sarah Manerva Trent, who died Feb. 15, 1997; sisters, Olive Crise and Martha Brant; brothers, F. Harry Lavan, Kenneth Lester Lavan and Jacob Roy Lavan. Survived by daughter, Mrs. Roger D. (Margaret "Peggy") Hay, Somerset, and grandson, John W. "J.W." Hay. Member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Bakersville. U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Was a partner in the Lavan Brothers Farm. Also retired as a job superintendent for 5R Excavating Company in New Florence. Member of Local 1058 Laborers' International Union of North America. Life member of FOE Aerie 1801, American Legion Post 941 in Donegal Township for 58 years, and VFW Post 554. He will be sadly missed by his friends at Laurel Mountain Inn. Friends received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home, Somerset, where service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Elisa A. Osman officiating.
