She was born in Greenville Township, Somerset County, Pa., the daughter of Jesse Garlets and Barbara Ellen Garlets Cober. She was educated in the schools of Meyersdale and attended Juanita College, Huntingdon, Pa. On December 30, 1909, she was married to Ira Denton Layman, who died September 27, 1937. Mrs. Layman's funeral services were held just nine years to the day after the funeral of her husband. Her broad sympathy and neighborliness won for her a very wide circle of friends. Her interest in her church (Church of the Brethren) was manifested in regular attendance. She attended Sunday school and church services the Sunday before her death. On the last Tuesday preceding her death, she motored to Eagle Rock, Va., and spent the night with her daughter, and returned home Wednesday morning. In the afternoon she visited the packing house on the farm and drove to the store. She was stricken that night at 12 o'clock and died one hour later, at 1:00 a.m., September 26. Surviving are her mother, Mrs. Barbara Cober, of Daleville, Va.; two brothers, W. H. Garlets of Tampa, Fla.; and R. L. Garlets, Roanoke, Va.; two sons, I. D. Layman, Jr., and Robert E. Layman, of Daleville, one daughter, Mrs. E. R. Allen, of Eagle Rock, Va., and two grandchildren. Pallbearers were George W. Layman, R. C. Huff, K. T. Ikenberry, Dr. E. B. Morgan, J. E. Miller and L. C. Keith. Those who attended the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Ervin, Buckhannan, W.Va., Mrs. Charles Hefner, French Creek, W.Va.; Mrs. Ed Curry, Buckhannon, W.Va.; Mr. E. R. O'Donnell, Washington, D.C.; Mr. and Mrs. Webster Bittner, Washington, D.C., Mr. and Mrs. Henzel Ecman, Pulaski, Va. Meyersdale Republican, October 25, 1946
