LAYMAN Word was received by Misses Ida and Beulah Engle of the death of their uncle, Norval Mason Layman, aged 88, who died at the Alta Hospital, Newell, Iowa, Sunday, March 9. Mr. Layman was the son of the late George L. and Eloie Reuch Layman and was born in Grantsville, September 27, 1862. He spent his boyhood days in this community. He was one of thirteen children, three of whom survive, George of Newell, Mrs. Lee Stocken of Roundup, Montana, and Harry C. of Chicago. Mr. Layman married Miss Laura Bell Turner, March 29, 1885, in the Frostburg Methodist Church. In 1887 the couple established a home on a farm near Newell. Later they moved to Newell, where he was engaged in the livery, feed, and gas and oil station businesses. He continued in business till his retirement in 1935. Mr. and Mrs. Layman celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on March 29, 1935, and on April 10, 1937, Mrs. Layman passed away. Mr. Layman was baptized and was received in the Methodist Church, Frostburg, in infancy. He was a devout active member of the First Methodist Church in Newell, and served as steward, trustee and official board member for a number of years. A gift from his estate of a $1,000 bond was given the Methodist Church of Newell for a contemplated new building. Mr. Layman was a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge and Farm Bureau. Funeral services were held at the Larson Funeral Home, and the Methodist Church, Newell, on Wednesday, March 12. The pastor, Rev. Nelson F. Grote, assisted by a former pastor, Rev. Karl W. G. Hiller, officiated. They paid a high tribute to the life of Mr. Layman as he was held in high esteem by his many friends. A mixed quartette sang "Old Rugged Cross," "One Sweetly Solemn Thought," and "Rock of Ages." Interment was in the Newell cemetery beside his wife. Mr. Layman was a brother of the late Mrs. Etta Engle and Thomas Layman of Long Stretch, and brother-in-law of William Turner. Mr. and Mrs. Layman are well remembered by the older residents of Grantsville Community as they visited relatives here in past years. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
