All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/somerset/ _______________________________________________ James Edward Leckemby, one of Meyersdale's most prominent elder citizens, died Sunday in Meyersdale Community Hospital. He was 92 years of age at his passing. For years, Mr. Leckemby, who has been retired for some time, was one of Meyersdale's most prominent, leading and active citizens. He was well known for about 18 years as the congenial operator of the newsstand on Main Street now operated by Mr. and Mrs. Ware Deeter. He was also employed, for a period of 41 years, as a conductor on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. For a period of 24 years he served as a member of Meyersdale borough council, a great deal of this time as its president. He also served six years as Mayor of Meyersdale. For a number of years, he served quite successfully as president of Somerset County Fair Association. He was a member of Meyersdale's Amity United Church of Christ, where her served on the Consistory. Mr. Leckemby was born in Philadelphia March 27, 1869, a son of William and Jane (Thomas) Leckemby. He was married to the former Martha Witt, who died in 1937. He was also preceded in death by three sons and a daughter. Surviving are three children: Robert R., McKeesport; Mrs. Sylvester Stouffer, Akron, Ohio, and Harry E., Rochester RD 1. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Alice Weller, Cleveland, Ohio, and Mrs. Lou Trainer, Blairsville, as well as seven grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Services were conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Price Funeral Home, Meyersdale, with the Rev. Arthur Hunn officiating. Interment was in Meyersdale Union Cemetery. The Republic, January 18, 1962 [L0476]
