Leith, 60, died Thursday night, Sept. 27, at the home of his sister, Dr. Mary Berston of Erie, Pa., where he went to live about a month ago, the condition of his health necessitating his giving up his home on Light Street, Meyersdale, where he resided for many years. A son of the late Joseph H. and Margaretta Meyer Leith, Karl Leith was born in Wellersburg, March 2, 1886. He completed his public school education in and near Meyersdale, and attended Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Va. He was an accomplished musician, served for many years as church organist, and appeared as religious and secular vocalist upon many occasions. He engaged in the teaching of music, instrumental and vocal, for 30 years, but due to ill health lived retired during the past few years. Mr. Leith was one of the directors of the Junior Drum and Bugle corps, which gained considerable publicity during the twenties. A veteran of World War I, Mr. Leith was an active member of the local American Legion post. He served a long time in various offices of the post. He is survived by one sister, Dr. Mary Berston of Erie, and one brother, Joseph W. Leith, of Bedford; three nieces and four nephews. His body was brought to Meyersdale last Thursday and prepared for burial at the W. C. Price and Son Funeral Home and was later taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Downie, North St., where funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30. Mrs. Downie is a niece of Mr. Leith. Services were conducted by the pastor of the deceased, Rev. H. K. Hilner, assisted by Rev. Sherwood Keiser. A large group of members of the American Legion and of the Masonic Lodge escorted the body from the home to Union Cemetery where burial was made. Meyersdale Republican, October 4, 1946
