Born June 13, 1915, in Hyasota, he was the son of Nicholas and Eva (Czervinsky) Lichvar. He was preceded in death by parents; sisters: Julia Cheatham and Anna MacGregor; brothers: Michael, Joseph, and Andrew Lichvar; and an infant brother and sister. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, the former Lucille Lowry; a daughter Kay Ann, married to William Cober Jr. of Berlin; and grandchildren: Elizabeth Cober Gillette, Christa Anne Cober, William John Cober, and Michael Livengood. He was a brother of Mary Walberg, of Las Vegas, Nev.; and Nicholas Lichvar of Philadelphia. He was a 1933 graduate of Boswell High School where he excelled in football and basketball and a 1938 graduate of Washington and Jefferson College where he excelled in football and boxing. He was a World War II Army veteran having served in the Pacific Theatre; retired Health and Physical Education teacher from Berlin High School where he coached football, basketball, baseball, and served as athletic director. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul's Russian Orthodox Church, Boswell; Salisbury VFW Post 8826; Berlin American Legion Post 445, where he served twice as Commander; Last Man's Club, Meyersdale Elks Lodge, where he was Past Exulted Ruler, District Deputy Grand Exulted Ruler, and State Trustee, AARP-NRTA division, Somerset County Oldtimers Baseball Assoc., and Hall of Fame inductee. He served as director and helped restart Jr. Legion and Sr. Legion Baseball in Somerset County where he also coached. He was a life member of PSEAR, and PRPSEA Somerset County Chapter; charter member of Berlin Area Historical Society; Past Berlin Borough Councilman and Democratic Committee Chairman; past member of Berlin Lions Club from 1946 to 1978. Family received friends Monday at Deaner Funeral Home, Berlin where Parastas was held Monday evening. A brief service was held at the funeral home Tuesday followed by Burial Service at SS. Peter and Paul's Orthodox Church, Boswell, with the Very Reverend John Govruski officiating. Interment, Salisbury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in John's name for a sports history archive to either Berlin Historical Society, Berlin, PA 15530 or Boswell Historical Society, Boswell, PA 15531.
