Born Nov. 1, 1917 in Salisbury, son of the late Daniel W. and Mabel (Miller) Livengood. A 1934 graduate of Salisbury-Elk Lick High School and a 1938 graduate of Juniata College. He earned two Ph.D. degrees in organic chemistry and biochemistry from Rutgers University in 1943. He and his wife, Mrs. Ollie (Meyers) Livengood, were married on Aug. 23, 1941. They spent their early years in Pittsburgh, and in Ossining, NY, moving to their present residence at Dr. Livengood's retirement in 1984. Dr. Livengood was employed as a research chemist with Union Carbid Corporation for 41 years. He joined the company in 1943 at the Mellon Institute where, as Fellow and Senior Fellow, he specialized in oil additives and the chemistry and applications of polyalkylene glycols. Over the years, he was active in teaching and training personnel both in the U.S. and abroad. He was a member of the research team which developed aircraft de-icing fluid, and he testified as an expert at Senate hearings on airline disasters. Dr. Livengood was an active member of his church throughout his life. He served as deacon at the Wilkinsburg Baptist Church in Wilkinsburg, and as a trustee and elder at the First Presbyterian Church of Oosining, NY. Since moving to Waynesboro, he has been a member of the Waynesboro Presbyterian Church. He was an avid golfer and an accomplished woodworker. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Judith A. Maxwell, Waynesboro, and Nancy L. Sampson, Pittsburgh; one son, Samuel M. Livengood, Philadelphia; 6 grandchildren; a great-grandson; sister, Mary E. Deal, Salisbury; brothers, James E. Livengood, Lancaster; 2 nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by one sister, Francea-McTigue. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, in Waynesboro Presbyterian Church, Waynesboro, with Rev. Dr. Charles B. Jessen officiating. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Salisbury Cemetery, Salisbury. The family will receive friends one-half hour prior to the services Tuesday morning in the church. It was his request to have no public viewing. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Waynesboro Presbyterian Church, 105 E. Main St., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268. Grove Funeral Home, Waynesboro, Pa. is in charge of the arrangements.
