He was only about a month short of completing his 88th year, and was the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Casper Loechel, natives of Germany, who located in Salisbury many years ago, where they reared a family of five daughters and two sons, three of whom survive, namely, Samuel C. Loechel of Salisbury, Mrs. Savilla Boyer of Pittsburgh, and Mrs. W. H. McBride, of Conneautville, Pa. Deceased is also survived by one son, Lester Loechel, and one grandson, Henry Loechel, Jr., both of Salisbury. The grandson is the only son of the late Edward M. Loechel, who was the eldest son of the subject of this sketch, and died last April, on Easter Sunday. The death of the aged father, who passed away so soon after the death of his wife and eldest son, both of whom died during the last 10 months, was doubtless hastened by his bereavement, as he was devotedly attached to both of them, and never ceased lamenting their death. Henry Loechel was a veteran of the Civil War, and was one of the last three of the 66 men who enlisted in the Union Army from Salisbury and vicinity. The other two who survive him are John J. Livengood, now in his 96th year, and his brother, Peter J., in his 88th, and still very active. Mr. Loechel lived his entire life in Salisbury and vicinity, except during the few months he was in the service of his country. He learned the shoemaking trade from his father in his early manhood, and followed that occupation until some time during the early "eighties," when he took charge of the old Valley House, a well known hotel which for some years prior had been conducted by his father-in-law, the late Daniel Barchus. Mr. Loechel became the owner of the old original Valley House not so long after taking charge of it, and later replaced it with a fine new hotel, which continued business under the same name until March, 1895, when it was destroyed by fire. The same year Mr. Loechel built a second new Valley House, which he conducted until some time in September, 1923, when it also was destroyed by fire. By that time he was well stricken in years, and since then, up to the day he died, lived in retirement. His hotel ranked among the best conducted hotels in Somerset County, and enjoyed a good patronage. Mr. Loechel had many good and kindly traits, hence had many friends who will be sorry to learn of his demise. The funeral service will be conducted Friday afternoon, the 15th instant, at 2:30 o'clock, at the Loechel residence, in charge of Rev. S. D. Sigler, pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church, of which deceased was a member. Interment in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, under direction of Funeral Director W. C. Price, of Meyersdale.
