He was born July 31, 1840 in Greenville Twp. & was aged 80 yrs., 8 mos. 17 days. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having enlisted in the 54th Pa. Vol. Inf., Co. D, & served the full duration of the war. He was always known as an honest & upright citizen, a loving father & husband & a god-fearing man. Mr. Long was married to Catherine Ann Grine, June 29, 1865, & is survived by his wife & the following children: Anna C. (Mrs. E.L. Stoddard) of Pittsburgh; Joseph H. & James W. of Glade City; Lillian C. & Mrs. Harry H. Wahler of Meyersdale; Sue (Mrs. Walter H. Dodson) of Connellsville, & Charles L. of Garrett. He also leaves 21 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, one brother, John of Masontown, PA. & two sisters, Julia (Mrs. John Albright) & Jane, (Mrs. Isaac Lint), both of Meyersdale. His early occupation in life was as contractor, building tram roads, logging & sawmilling & later as a successful farmer. Several years ago on account of failing health, he sold the farm & purchased the present home on the Meyersdale & Sand Patch road, 1 mile east of town, living a retired life. Funeral services were held at his late home Tues., Apr. 19 at 2 p.m. by Rev. J. L. Frantz of the Lutheran church, of which he was a lifelong member. A male quartette, consisting of S.B. & R. H. Philson & C. W. & W. H. Baldwin, sang several favorite hymns of the departed one. The funeral service was conducted by Undertaker Price; burial in Union Cemetery in the family plot.
