Born Jan. 22, 1926, in Blough, Quemahoning Township, a son of John Russell "Jack" and Vallie Lee (Scothern) Long. Preceded in death by parents, brother, Landon L. Long and sister, Virginia Hershberger. Survived by wife, the former Mary Jean Engle, to whom he was married 53 years; children, Mrs. Barry (Christine) Cunningham of Knoxville, Tenn., and Allen J. Long, married to the former Stacey Dinning of Berlin; grandchildren: Melissa Crites of Savannah, Ga., Mrs. Jessica Woodruff of Johnson City, Tenn., Zachary Siddell of Knoxville, Tenn., James and Justine Long of Berlin; and great-grandsons, Jacob and Kain. Member of Trinity Lutheran Church. A 1944 graduate of Somerset High School. U.S. Army veteran of World War II in the 42nd "Rainbow" Division. Retired in 1988 as a lineman for Penelec with 37 1/2 years of service. Also member of Mountain Field and Stream Club, Laurel Ridge Sportsman's Association Lodge 358 F&AM, and VFW Post 554. Friends received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home, Somerset. Funeral service will be conducted 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Somerset. The Rev. Robert L. Hoover Jr., Sr. pastor, officiating. Interment, Somerset County Memorial Park. No viewing at the church. A Masonic service will be held 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
