Dr. John Daniel Long, 84, New Oxford, died Nov. 6, 1998 at York Hospital. Born Aug 14, 1914 in Meyersdale, a son of the late Daniel W. and Susie (Gnagey) Long. Survived by wife Inez (Goughenour) Long; daughter, Kathy, married to Dan Missildine, York; son, David, married to Barbara Long, Livingston, N.J.; 5 grandchildren, Amanda and Amy Long and Nathaniel, Whit and Nina Missildine; brothers, William Long, Meyersdale, and Paul Long, Bedford; and sisters, Mary Howar, Meyersdale, and Ruth Walters, Wheelersburg, Ohio. His career as pastor and preacher in the Church of the Brethren spanned 63 years, including 24 years in the Lancaster Church from 1955-79, when the congregation moved from Charlotte Street to a new building on Sunset Avenue in 1959. He served the Mack Memorial Church of the Brethren, Dayton, Ohio, in 1945-55, when the congregation relocated and built a new church in 1952. Both congregations grew in numbers, program and outreach in new facilities. Upon his retirement in 1979, he and his wife, a retired McCaskey High School teacher, traveled across four states to 12 churches where he was interim pastor from 1980-94. He preached his last sermon in the Lancaster Church in September 1998. He fulfilled his lifelong calling as pastor and preacher. His call was clear and he rejected attempts to detour him from his goal. Upon graduation from Meyersdale High School and Juniata College, he served four mountain churches near the home farm of his parents near Meyersdale. While a student at Bethany Seminary in Chicago, he traveled by train to Liberty Mills, Indiana, in a weekend pastorate until graduation in 1941. He served the University Park Church, Washington DC, 1941-44 and attended classes at Catholic University. In 1945, he earned a graduate degree at Yale Divinity School. Elizabethtown College awarded him an honorary degree in 1962. He continued education in pastoral care and preaching. For three summers, he attended Massanetta Springs Bible Conference, attended classes at Lancaster Theological Seminary, Lyman Beecher Lectures in New Haven, CT, and Pennsylvania Pastors' Conferences. He was a delegate at Church of the Brethren District and Annual Conferences and served as District Moderator and member of the General Board for five years. Local congregational life was his first priority. One of his proudest moments was witnessing his son's graduation and ordination at Episcopal Seminary, NYC and his vocation as United Church of Christ pastor. A memorial service will be held 4:20 p.m., Dec 27 at the Lancaster Church of the Brethren. There will be no viewing. Burial will be in Meyersdale Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to pastoral care or volunteer projects in a congregation chosen by the donor. Arrangements are being made by Feiser Funeral Home, Inc., 302 Lincoln Way West, New Oxford. Daily American, November 9, 1998 [L1264 and L1265]
