Born Feb. 9, 1918 in Summit Township, a son of the late Daniel William and Suie Elizabeth (Gnagey) Long. Also preceded in death by his wife, the former Carrie Virginia Miller. Her passing on Feb. 5, 2000 ended a marriage of 54 years. Also preceded in death by a brother, Rev. John W. Long. Survived by three daughters, Virginia, wife of David Hay, Somerset, Carolyn "Susie," wife of Herb Long, Meyersdale, and Barbara, wife of Torn Long, Meyersdale; four grandchildren, Christina, Carrie, Chad and Todd Long. A brother of Paul L. Long, married to the former Louise Knepper, Bedford and two sisters, Mary, widow of Harold Howar, Meyersdale, and Ruth, wife of Jack Walter, Wheelersburg, Ohio, and special sister-in-law, Inez (Goughnour) Long, widow of the Rev. John W. Long, New Oxford. Bill enjoyed people, being out in the public, serving his Lord and savior and family activities. He was a devoted life-long member of the Meyersdale Church of the Brethren, where he served more than 50 years as deacon and many years as Chairman of the Deacon Board. He was a former Sunday School teacher, worship leader and faithful greeter. Bill spent his lifetime farming, performing backhoe services, working at Penn Tables and retired with 15 years service in 1988 as custodian at Meyersdale Elementary School. Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Price Funeral Home, Meyersdale. Service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Meyersdale Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Mike Swick, Youth Director/Interim Pastor and the Rev. Eric Shaulis, Interim Pastor officiating. Viewing 10 a.m. until time of service. Interment, Union Cemetery, Meyersdale.
