Miss Lowenstein was the daughter of the late Charles and Rachel (Winterberg) Lowenstein, and was born in Grantsville in the home now owned by Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Beachy. She was the last member of a family of six children to pass away. Her parents were pioneer residents of Grantsville. Mr. Lowenstein was an expert tailor and conducted a tailor shop in Grantsville for many years. Miss Ella attended the Grantsville public schools after which she taught in Garrett County for seven years. She was awarded a scholarship in the Maryland State Normal School in Baltimore, in which she completed her pedagogical education. While she was attending the normal school the family moved to Johnstown, Pa., and upon completing her teacher training she also went to Johnstown where she resumed her teaching career, which she followed until her retirement on account of age. She is survived by a nephew, Charles Bolden of Johnstown, and three nieces - Mrs. Philip Peddicord of Baltimore; and Misses Ruth and Vivian Laughery of Greensburg, Pa. Funeral services were held at the Picking Funeral Home, Johnstown, last Wednesday afternoon. Interment in Grandview Cemetery, Johnstown. She was a member of the Lutheran Church.
