According to the report, Lowery was operating a truck from the shovel to a pit. The accident occurred as he was returning from dumping his load of material. In going down an incline along the River road, the truck got out of control. It was thought either the air brake was not working properly or that he attempted to change from low gear into a higher one. Witnesses said he swerved the truck inward, going up the embankment about twelve feet. Whether he then fell or jumped from the machine was not known but as the truck rolled back down the bank the rear wheels passed over the man's head and chest, killing him instantly. Mr. Lowery was born near Meyersdale, but since boyhood he has resided at Jennings with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Platter, who reared him. He was 29. About seven years ago he married Miss Carrie Platter. She and their two small daughters, ages one and three respectively, survive. Also surviving are his mother, Mrs. Savilla Robison, near Meyersdale, his foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Platter, Jennings, one sister, Mrs. Cecil Wilburn, Jennings, four brothers, Carl, Earl and Kenneth Lowery, near Meyersdale, and Clyde Lowery, who is with the U.S. Army, a half-sister, Miss Rita Robeson, and three half- brothers, Udell, Robert and Junior Robison, near Meyersdale. Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 o'clock Monday morning from the Jennings Methodist Church. The Rev. Lawrence Bianchi, an Evangelist, near Johnstown, and Rev. Foster Bittinger, pastor of the Westernport Church of the Brethren, officiated. Music was furnished by the choir from the Westernport Church of the Brethren. Interment was in the Bittinger Cemetery. Pallbearers were Stanley Wiley, William Wiley, Mahlon Hoover, Homer Butler, Osborn Yommer and Harold Yommer. Meyersdale Republican, September 25, 1941
