Sorrow because a prominent citizen, the son of a highly respected aged couple, a husband, and the father of a family of nine children, died by his own hand. Marshall Lowrey, proprietor of the village store, a local coal operator, farmer and justice of the peace, and member of the present board of supervisors of Elk Lick Township, for reasons that can only be conjectured, took his own life by shooting himself in the head with a .22-caliber rifle. Coroner P. C. Dosch and Deputy Sheriff Harry C. Jacobs conducted an investigation after Lowrey's body was found in a bedroom by his married daughter, Mrs. Mary Jane Merrbaugh. The two officers were convinced that his death was due to a self-inflicted wound. The coroner learned that Lowrey and one of his sons had been talking in the former's bedroom a short time prior to the firing of the fatal shot. The son, after leaving his father, took a truck from a garage under the Lowrey home and it is believed the sound of the truck muffled the sound of the shot, so that no one heard it, and the body was not found until some time afterward. The victim of the tragedy spent his entire life in Elk Lick Township. He was nearly 43 years old, having been born Feb. 6, 1901, the son of Samuel and Janet (Walker) Lowrey. Besides his aged parents, he is survived by his wife, Trellis Marie (Hinebaugh) Lowrey, and the following children: Mrs. Mary Jane Merrbaugh, Annabel, Margaret, Eugene, Jack, Paul, Ray, Robert and Lee Lowrey, all living at home, except Jack who is in the U.S. Army in Alaska. A brother and four sisters also survive, namely: Frank Lowrey, Connellsville; Mrs. Margaret Hinebaugh, Cresaptown, Md.; Mrs. Jane Steele, Coal Run; Mrs. Mary Young and Mrs. Trellis Clause, Bedford. He was a member of the Meyersdale Lodge of Moose, Salisbury Lodge of I.O.O.F., and Knights of Pythias. Funeral services were conducted this (Thursday) afternoon at the Coal Run M. E. Church, by Rev. Thomas R. Thomas of Meyersdale, followed by burial in Salisbury I.O.O.F. Cemetery under direction of Stanley M. Thomas, Salisbury mortician. Meyersdale Republican, January 20, 1944
