Lutz, 86, of Somerset died March 5, 2001 at his residence. Born June 24, 1914 in Butler County, he is the son of the late Samuel and Anna (Stroble) Lutz. Also preceded in death by brothers: Florian J., Richard J. and S. Bernard Lutz. Survived by wife, the former Althea Pile to whom he was married almost 59 years, and children: Gretchen A. married to Robert L. Baer of Pittsburgh, Pa., Joseph of Ebensburg, Janet A. Lutz of Murraysville and Amy L. Lutz of Louisville, Colo. Five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Lutz retired in 1965 from the Pa. State Police as a sergeant after serving 28 1/2 years. He served 1 1/2 years as chief of police in Meyersdale, four years as chief county detective, four years as deputy sheriff and eight years as clerk of courts for Somerset County. He was a member of State Police Retired Association, FOP, Elks of Meyersdale and the 55 and Over Speeders. Mr. Lutz was cremated at his request. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Robert H. Halverson Funeral Home, Somerset, where service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday with Monsignor Harold Biller celebrant. Graveside service and interment at Somerset County Memorial Park will be private. Contributions may be made to Somerset "In Touch" Hospice, 1590 N.
