Lyons, 56-year-old farmer and saw mill operator of Meyersdale, R.D. 3, died in the Miners Hospital, Frostburg, Md., last Friday, July 9, a few minutes after being admitted, as a result of injuries sustained when he was trampled by a horse in the barn at his home near Pocahontas. The fatal accident occurred about 6 p.m., when Mr. Lyons was putting the horse in the barn, but was not discovered until some time later when Mrs. Lyons heard the trampling commotion there, and summoned other members of the family to help in the investigation. They discovered Mr. Lyons lying on the barn floor beneath the hind legs of the animal, in a badly mutilated condition. According to the family, the eight-year-old horse had always been gentle, and they believe he may have been frightened by another animal. Authorities investigating the accident termed the death accidental and said death resulted from an intra-cranial hemmorhage resulting from a fractured skull and from fractures of the ribs. The man also suffered extensive injuries of the nose, mouth and both hands were broken. Mr. Lyons was born May 15, 1892, in Middle Creek, Pa., a son of the late Silas and Mary (Pletcher) Lyons. He is survived by his wife, Minnie Viola (Fresh) Lyons; three sons, Ernest A. of Rockwood R.D. 1, John L., and Edward J., of Meyersdale, R.D. 3; four daughters - Mrs. Martin Nichols of Confluence, Mrs. Earl Sanner of Nemacolin, Mrs. George Faidley of Somerset, R.D. 2, and Miss Pearl Lyons, at home; two brothers, Irvin of Rockwood, R.D. 2, and Austin of Rockwood; one sister, Mrs. Lucinda Gary, Stahlstown, and thirteen grandchildren. Brief funeral services were held at the Lyons home, Monday afternoon, after which services were held in the Barron Lutheran Church, ten miles west of Rockwood. Interment was made in the church cemetery under the direction of W. C. Price & Son. Meyersdale Republican, July 15, 1948
