Born May 18, 1923, in Paint Borough, son of the late Charles and Helen (Gubanec) Makuch. Preceded in death by brothers, Charles, Jr. and Andrew Makuch; and sisters Anna Salayka, Helen Makuch, Ann Shuster and Mary Salonchak. Survived by sisters Pauline Somers and husband Peter, with whom he resided, Oceanside, Calif.; Catherine Benza, Cleveland, Ohio; Irene Coffroth, Margaret Pavilck and husband Robert, all of Windber; and brother, Michael Makuch and wife Verna, Windber. Also survived by brother-in-law, Nick Shuster and sister-in-law Martha Makuch, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was a former coal miner for The Berwind-White Coal Mining Co. and also worked at the former Windber Hospital and Wheeling Clinic. He was a proud World War II Navy veteran and received the following commendations: Philippine Liberation, Pacific Theatre (5 stars), American Theatre and Victory Medals. He served aboard the "Fleet Oiler" USS Atascosa. The USS Atascosa fueled the battleships Iowa, Indiana and Alabama. The USS Atascosa also serviced the aircraft carrier Enterprise, along with many of the task force destroyers. He formerly attended St. John of Damascus Orthodox Church, Poway, Calif. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at William Kisiel Funeral Home, Windber, with a Panachida Service at 7:30 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home followed by Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m. at SS. Peter & Paul Orthodox Church, Windber. The Rev. Protopresbyter David Smoley officiating. Burial at the church cemetery. Military graveside services by Windber VFW Post 4795.
