All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/somerset/ ________________________________________________ RICHARD MANKAMYER Richard Mankamyer, aged 85 years, 7 months and 29 days, died at 10:15 o'clock Thursday, Feb. 20, 1941, at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Rev. and Mrs. Emory I. Mankamyer, of Wine Street, South Connellsville. He had been bedfast 11 months. Mr. Mankamyer was born June 22, 1855, near Garrett, Somerset County, a son of the late Rev. Christian and Mary (Smearmund) Mankamyer. He was a farmer and resided 75 years in Larimer Township before coming to South Connellsville in December 1939, to make his home with his son. During his life in Larimer Township, Mr. Mankamyer served 16 years as school director and a similar number of years as road supervisor. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Church, near White Oak, for 65 years and had been a lay delegate a number of times to the annual and general conference of the Evangelical Church. Mr. Mankamyer was married twice, his first wife being Miss Ida B. Witt, who preceded him in death 21 years ago. Ten children were born to this union, seven of whom survive. August 15, 1923, Mr. Mankamyer married Susan Bittner McGarey of Connellsville and she died June 5, 1936. Surviving are the following children: Mrs. Effie Compton and William H. Mankamyer, both of Sand Patch, Mrs. Ivy Murray and Richard A. Mankamyer, both of Akron, Ohio, Mrs. Pearl Bender of Knox, Pa., Mrs. Elizabeth Murray of Meyersdale and Rev. Mankamyer at whose home his death occurred. He also leaves 33 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and three brothers, Joseph Mankamyer of Meyersdale, C. S. Mankamyer of Sand Patch, and John Mankamyer of Somerset. The funeral was held Monday, Feb. 24, with a prayer at the home of Rev. Mankamyer at 11:00 o'clock in the morning in charge of Rev. Elmer A. Schultz, pastor of the First United Brethren Church. The body was then taken to St. John's Evangelical Church where services were conducted at 2:00 o'clock by his pastor, Rev. G. O. Bishop. Burial was made in the church cemetery in charge of Funeral Director Charles A. McCormick. Meyersdale Republican, March 13, 1941
