He was born May 9, 1924, in Somerset, son of the late William and Elizabeth (Rodgers) Mapes. He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert,. He is survived by his wife, the former Susan Billetdeoux and 11 children: David, Rebecca, Margaret, Christopher and Patrick, all of Somerset; Mrs. Donald (Mary Beth) Durst of Salisbury; James of Lake Placid, N.Y.; Mrs. John (Linda) Wilson III, Ft. Worth, Texas; Stephen of Pittsburgh; Timothy of Berlin; Mrs. Richard (Patricia) Madey of Harrisburg; four grandchildren. Brother of Jane and William, Jr., both of Somerset; Catherine of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; and Charles of Clinton, Ohio. He was the owner and operator of Mapes Arco Service Station, Somerset. He was a World War II veteran serving with U.S. Marine Corps.; member of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church; VFW Post 554, Somerset; life-time member and past commander of American Legion Post 181, Somerset; charter member of Somerset Jaycees; original member of Samuel S. Crouse Post 181 American Legion Crouse Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps; honorary member of Somerset Volunteer Fire Department. Friends were received at the Wilbur D. Miller Funeral Home. Mass of Resurrection was held at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, with the Rev. Father Harold Biller officiating. Interment, Somerset County Memorial Park. The Republic, April 29, 1982 [M0135]
