Born March 31, 1923 in Somerset Township, a son of William and Elizabeth (Rodgers) Mapes Sr. Preceded in death by parents; brothers: Charles, Robert and Lewis Mapes and sister M. Jane Mapes. Survived by wife, the former Beulah Mae Sarver to whom he was married 56 years; children: Mrs. Larry (Donna Jean) Rhoads of Somerset, William Mapes III of Somerset and Ms. Debra Ann Weyand of Somerset; two granddaughters, Jacquelyne Ann Rhoads and Jennifer Autumn Weyand; sister, Mrs. Catherine Bertoldi of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; aunt, Mrs. Naomi Neff of Johnstown. A 1942 graduate of Somerset High School. Member of Somerset Church of the Brethren, U.S. Army veteran of World War II where he served in the Military Police. Retried in 1983 as a Car Inspector for the B&O Railroad with 42 years of service. Friends received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home; Somerset where service will be conducted 10 a.m. Wednesday with Rev. Mark S. Bendes officiating.
