Mrs. Martin left her home here a few weeks ago to visit her children living at some distance from Meyersdale. She went first to Cleveland, O., for a brief visit with her son, Potter Shaw, and his wife and two young sons. From there she went to Latrobe, Pa., to visit her daughter, Mrs. Harold A. Stuart, and family, and from there to Somerset to spend a day or two with her youngest daughter, Mrs. Horner, before returning to her home in Meyersdale. She was not feeling as well as usual when she arrived at Somerset, on Sunday. Her condition did not seem to be alarming, but death attributed to coronary occlusion, came during the night. Mrs. Martin was a little over 70 years of age, having been born at Barton, Md., August 20, 1871, of English parents, the late John and Charlotte (Truscot) Meager. The family moved from Barton, Md. to Salisbury, Pa., when Lydia was but a young child. Her father was a prominent mine foreman and coal mining operator in the Elk Lick coal region for many years. Mr. Meager was a man of outstanding Christian character, a lay preacher of the Methodist Church, an expert coal miner and successful businessman as well. Coming to this country when a young man to work in the mines of the Georges Creek big vein coal region of Alleghany County, Md., he made a number of trips back to his home land to bring over relatives and friends, a number of whom he succeeded in getting established here as prosperous and loyal naturalized American citizens like himself and his good wife. Miss Lydia Meager grew to womanhood in Salisbury and for several years before her marriage to the late H. Columbus Shaw of Garrett County, Md., she was a successful and popular school teacher in Salisbury. Her first husband, H. C. Shaw, was a prosperous businessman of Grantsville, who located in Salisbury, Pa., after his marriage to Miss Meager, and until his accidental death in 1910 he was a successful businessman and coal operator in the Salisbury community. He lost his life while assisting in making a new mine opening near West Salisbury. After several years widowhood she married Henry D. Martin, a cousin of her first husband. Some time after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Martin bought the James H. Black residence on Beachly Street, Meyersdale, where she had resided ever since. Mr. Martin died about ten years ago. During her 25 years' residence in Meyersdale, Mrs. Martin was one of the most active members and liberal supporters of the First Methodist Church. She also was active in the W.C.T.U., Meyersdale Garden Club and the Federated Woman's Club. She is survived by four children, all fathered by her first husband - three daughters and one son - Mrs. Harold Stuart of Latrobe, Mrs. James B. Slicer of Meyersdale, Mrs. Hester Horner of Somerset and Potter Shaw of Cleveland, Ohio. She also leaves several grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Lottie Emerick of Akron, O. She was a devoted mother and kind neighbor and friend. Funeral services were conducted at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the late home, 100 Beachly Street, by Rev. John D. Warman, pastor of the Meyersdale Methodist Church. Interment in the Salisbury I.O.O.F. Cemetery under the direction of W. C. Price & Son, Meyersdale morticians. Meyersdale Republican, November 6, 1941
