He was aged 78 years, 8 months and 13 days. He was a son of George and Rachel (Boyer) Martz and was born October 30, 1851, in Southampton Township, Somerset County, near Kennell's Mills, where he received two years' schooling. In 1859 the family moved to Savage Mountain where he received the rest of his schooling in an old-fashioned building. He attended church in the years 1860-1895 at the old Fink's Church, which is still standing in a dilapidated condition, during which time he attended many revivals, in which many souls were converted to God. He was converted during the ministry of Rev. J. C. Powell, who was then pastor of the Berlin circuit, now a retired minister at Hyndman. Mr. Martz believed in the old-fashioned salvation, obtained by calling upon God in prayer. He knew God answered prayer. On Dec. 29, 1881, he was married to Miss Matilda Raupach, to which union were born five children. In 1882 he purchased a piece of ground from his father and thereon erected a house and barn and farmed until the year 1900, at which time he moved to Glencoe and started a grocery store. In 1901 he was appointed postmaster of Glencoe, from which he resigned in 1914, his daughter, Bessie, being appointed in his place. Mr. Martz remained in the grocery business until his death. Since moving to Glencoe the Evangelical church was built, of which he became an active member and regular attendant, remaining so until his death. He was survived by his wife and following children: Mrs. Alice M. Van Gosen, of Yankeetown, Florida; Misses Bessie A., Laura E. and Nannie M., at home. One child and one grandchild passed away before he did. The following named brothers and sisters still remain: Noah H. and Solomon, of Glencoe; Herman G. and Mrs. Calvin L. Baker, of Scottdale, and Mrs. Lanah Hughes, of Garrett. Nine brothers and sisters preceded him to the grave. Funeral services were held on Wednesday morning, July 16, in the Glencoe Evangelical Church in charge of the pastor, Rev. Chas. W. Evans, assisted by Rev. J. C. Powell, followed by burial in the family plot at Mt. Lebanon. Johnson & Son of Berlin were the undertakers. Friends and relatives from Cumberland and Corrigansville, Scottdale, and Mt. Pleasant, Pa., and Chicago, Ill., attended the funeral. Meyersdale Republican, July 24, 1930
