The young matron had been despondent for some time, and had threatened self-destruction on several occasions. Craig Shaffer and Cecil Portor, residents of Wellersburg, passed the Martz home a short time before the tragedy. Mrs. Martz called to them that she was about to end her life. At first they thought it was merely an idle threat, but later they decided to return to the Martz home, where they found the body suspended from the ceiling. Mrs. Martz, it appears, had fashioned a noose in a rope which had been used to suspend a swing for her 11-months' old daughter, before attaching it to a hook in the ceiling of the room and leaping from the chair. Her feet were within an inch of the floor when the body was discovered. Coronor Emily Fluck was notified by telephone of the tragedy, and accompanied by a member of the local State Police, motored to Wellersburg, Tuesday night. After concluding a thorough investigation, the coronor announced that an inquest would not be necessary. Mrs. Martz' husband did not learn of the suicide until an hour after the tragic event. In addition to her husband and daughter, Mrs. Martz is survived by her parents, who reside in Cumberland. Meyersdale Republican, July 7, 1932
