Solomon Martz, an aged resident of Glencoe, last Saturday morning lost his life when run down by a B. & O. freight train. His body was badly mangled and lacerated when retrieved from beneath the long string of freight cars several hundred yards down the track. Solomon Martz was aged 81 years, and for many years has lived alone. He was never married. It is believed he was on his way to a neighbors to get some bread at about 6:45 Saturday morning and due to the infirmities of old age did not hear or see the oncoming train. The engineer on the train said that he saw the aged man start across the tracks in front of the train but could not bring the train to a stop soon enough to avoid the accident. Mr. Martz's head and chest were crushed and both legs and arms were fractured. His remains were turned over to undertaker Johnson & Son of Berlin and the corpse was not visible to friends and neighbors before burial in the Mt. Lebanon Cemetery on Monday afternoon. Funeral services were conducted in the Evangelical and Reformed Church at Glencoe at 2 o'clock Monday. Solomon Martz was a son of George and Rachel (Boyer) Martz, both deceased. He is survived by a brother, Herman Martz, of Scottdale. He was a familiar character of the Glencoe community and well known to every railroader who passed through this little mountain village.
