Masters, former businessman and resident of Meyersdale and Confluence, died at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. David Reese, at 400 State St., Johnstown, at 2 p.m., March 15, at the age of 95 years, 5 months and 20 days. He had been ill since Jan. 1. He was born in Everett, Pa., Sept. 25, 1850, a son of William and Nancy (Martin) Masters. During the Civil War he was a clerk in a hardware store and later worked in his father's saddlery shop. He was one of the first graduates of the school of pharmacy of the University of Pennsylvania. In 1867 while clerking in a drug store in Bedford, he had the pleasure of waiting on Mrs. Abraham Lincoln when she and her son Tad stopped by at the Bedford pharmacy while passing through Bedford, to make a small purchase. When the late Dr. U. M. Beachly of Meyersdale in 1871 started a drug store on Main Street, where Angelo Vitale's hotel is now located, Mr. Masters came to Meyersdale as manager of the Beachly drug store, and a few years later married Miss Eliza Beachly, his employer's eldest daughter. Some time after his marriage he became owner of a drug store in Everett where he remained in business for a long while and was a member of the town council for 16 years. Returning to Meyersdale he became superintendent of the Beachly Coal Company for 13 years, living in Confluence for some years while operating the Beachly coal mine near that place. After the death of his wife in 1920 he made his home with his son-in-law and daughter in Johnstown. Surviving are five children: Eugene, Albany, Tex.; Frank, Harrisburg; Mrs. James A. Sloan, Portage; Mrs. Charles S. Evans, Ebensburg, and Mrs. David Reese, mentioned above. He also leaves 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Masters was a sterling citizen and Christian gentleman, taking interest in Sunday school work and at the time of his death was the oldest member of the Pennsylvania Sabbath School Association.
