Matthews, 81, of North Rosina Avenue, Somerset, died Sept. 30, 1983, at his residence. He was born March 27, 1902, in Johnstown, a son of the late James and Eleanor (Morgan) Matthews. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Millie. Survived by his wife, the former Elizabeth Zoner; and two daughters: Mrs. James (Betsy) Vincent of Short Acres, N.J.; and Mrs. Edgar L. (Archille) Hoffman of Racine, Wisc.; also four grandchildren. He was a member of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church; Somerset County Bar Association for 55 years; Somerset Volunteer Fire Department; Somerset Lodge No. 358, F&AM; and Somerset Kiwanis Club. Mr. Matthews was a graduate of W&J College and had attended Harvard Law School. In 1927 he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh Law School. He was a former District Attorney of Somerset County and had served as assistant Attorney General for the State of Pennsylvania for a number of years. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Richard E. Hauger Funeral Home where service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday with Dr. William T. Doncaster Jr. officiating.
