Daughter of James Garfield and Anna Barrett Shaffer, she was born July 1, 1899 in Jenner Township, Somerset County. Preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry W. Maurer in 1962; a son John H. Maurer, and a sister Emily S. Dietz. Survived by a sister, Naomi Shaffer, Virginia Beach, Va.; a daughter-in-law Sarah Maurer Boney, Staunton, Va.; two granddaughters, Laura Ann Maurer, Greensboro, N.C., and Karen Wilson Maurer, Chapel Hill, N.C. Mrs. Maurer lived most of her life in Indiana County where she was a graduate from Indiana State Teacher's College, now IUP. She was a teacher for Westmont Hilltop School District until her retirement in 1974, then worked as a volunteer teacher for Twin Wells Indian School in northern Arizona. Mrs. Maurer also volunteered as a receptionist for the Wartburg Lutheran Nursing Home, Mt. Vernon, N.Y. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church. Family will receive friends from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at the Zion Lutheran Church in the Chapman Room. A memorial service will follow at 10 a.m. with Pastor Roy P. Washill officiating. Interment will be in Casebeer Lutheran Cemetery, Somerset County. Memorial contributions may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church Endowment Fund, Sixth and Church Streets, Indiana, Pa. 15701.
