Maust, son of Jonas and Barbara Miller Maust, was born July 29, 1865, and died October 29, 1948, aged 83 years and 3 months. He spent his busy life almost entirely in Elk Lick Township and was one of its most industrious farmers. Modest and retiring in disposition he was a man who attended to his own matters with efficiency, yet when called upon to serve other causes, he responded willingly and with good judgment. In his youth he united with the Amish Mennonite church and remained a consistent member of the Conservative branch of the church until his death. He was a generous supporter of its activities in many ways and gave freely of his means and talents in its service and in many things that contributed to the welfare of the community. On January 28, 1894, he was married to Matilda Beachy, daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth Yoder Beachy, Aurora, W.Va. To them were born two daughters and two sons; Iva, wife of Evan Miller, Meyersdale, Pa., Allen of Grantsville, Md., Enos, Meyersdale, Pa., and Fannie who had been married to Floyd Miller of Grantsville. Two foster sons were reared in the family; Merle Brant of Bedford, and George Leith, living in Cumberland. He was preceded in death by his wife who died in March, 1940 and by their daughter Fannie, who died in November, 1942. He was one of a family of thirteen children of which five remain: Mrs. Henry (Magdalena) Yoder; Mrs. Daniel (Annie) C. Yoder, Iowa City, Iowa; Mary, Meyersdale and Jonas W., Goshen, Ind. His brothers and sisters preceding him in death are: Lydia, Meyersdale; Noah, (twin) Meyersdale; Mrs. Daniel (Eve) Gnagey, Pigeon, Mich.; Mrs. Daniel (Amanda) Otto, Springs, Pa.; Simon, Springs; Mrs. Jacob E. (Catherine) Gnagey, Archbold, Ohio; Joseph, Pigeon, Mich. He was unusually healthy and strong until he had a severe case of blood poisoning twenty-six years ago, which necessitated the amputation of one finger and almost cost his life. He recovered his health which was good until he suffered a stroke in 1942 from which he recovered sufficiently to do some light work but always had to use a cane to walk. In the last years his strength was gradually failing and especially during this last summer he declined in vigor. At the house, services were conducted Tuesday morning by Bishop C. W. Bender and the funeral services were held at the Oak Dale place of worship near his late home and was in charge of Pre. Shem Peachey, with the ministers Mark Peachey and Ivan Miller, preaching the sermons. Interment in nearby cemetery in charge of mortician Winterburg of Grantsville. Pre. Jonas B. Miller concluded the service. Meyersdale Republican, November 11, 1948
