Maust, 23, of Somerset R.D., died at 1:15 a.m. in the Somerset Community Hospital from injuries received in an auto accident about 3 a.m. Monday morning. Dr. A. M. Uphouse, Somerset County coroner, said Maust died of a broken back and neck injuries. The coroner is awaiting a report on a state police investigation to decide if an inquest is necessary. Officers of the Somerset substation were checking the case. Maust was injured, according to reports, when the car he was driving crashed into a culvert along the road near the Somerset County Fair Grounds, Meyersdale. Riding in the car were Grover Maust, his brother, from Shanksville and James Stevenson, near Somerset. Both received slight injuries but neither was hospitalized. The injured were treated at the office of Dr. Charles Q. Griffith, Meyersdale, and young Maust was later admitted to the Somerset hospital. Dr. Griffith summoned Chief of Police James Brocht, who investigated the conditions of the accident and turned the case over to the state police at Somerset. Chief of Police Brocht stated that it appeared as though the car was traveling towards Meyersdale when the accident occurred. None of the occupants had an operator's license. He added that the car rolled more than 200 feet after hitting the culvert. The vehicle was practically demolished.
