Maust, well known and highly respected citizen of Elk Lick Township, passed away Friday, Nov. 13, in the Memorial Hospital, Cumberland. His death was very unexpected. He was in the hospital for treatment which he and his family expected would soon restore him to health. On the morning before his death he was stricken by a heart attack. Members of the family were summoned to his bedside, and all was done for him that possibly could be done, but his death occurred at about 8:30 Friday evening, just after the arrival of his daughters, Ruth and Barbara, from Harrisburg. Simon Maust, the son of Jonas and Barbara Maust, was born in Elk Lick Township, Oct. 2, 1876, and died at the age of 66 years, one month and 12 days. He was a man of varied ability; having served his community as farmer, carpenter, and in saw-mill work and apple-butter making. In later years he was employed by the Miller Machine Works in various capacities. On Jan. 12, 1901, he was married to Annie Orendorf of Bittinger, Md., who passed to her reward one year later. On Aug. 23, 1908 he was married to Elizabeth D. Otto who survives him. To this union were born two sons and two daughters, all of whom are living: Ray Otto Maust of Springs, Walter Floyd Maust of Meyersdale, Ruth Naomi of Harrisburg and Barbara Lucile, at home. He is survived by two grandsons, Edward and Denton, and the following brothers and sisters: Joseph J., Pigeon, Mich.; Mrs. Catharine Gnagey, Archibold, Ohio; Mrs. Henry T. Yoder, Kalona, Iowa; Joel J., Meyersdale R.D. 3; Lewis J., Meyersdale R.D. 3; Mrs. Annie Yoder, Iowa City, Iowa; Mary, Meyersdale R.D. 3; and Jonas W., Milford, Indiana. Three sisters and one brother preceded him in death. When a young man he was baptised and received into the Amish church. A number of years later he transferred his membership to the Springs Mennonite Church. He was ordained to the office of deacon, Oct. 25, 1931. In this capacity he served the church faithfully until the time of his death. Funeral services were held in the Springs Mennonite Church Nov. 17, 1942, in charge of Rev. Roy Kinsinger, Grantsville, Md., who used as a text Num. 23:10; "Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his." Rev. Newton Weber of Salisbury, assisted. Music was under direction of Rev. Milton Miller, Grantsville, Md. Pallbearers were of the Ministry of the Casselman Valley District, Bishop Isaac Metzler, Glade, Md., Rev. Jacob Kinsinger, Grantsville, R.D., was an honorary pallbearer. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery under the direction of William Winterburg, local mortician.
