Born Jan. 13, 1918 at Boardman, Clearfield County, the son of Simon and Elizabeth (Kosnosky) Mayak. Preceded in death by parents, two sisters: Ann Gavlak and Josephine Berhbom. Survived by wife the former Mary Jane Welsh to whom he was married 56 years; children: Mrs. Michael (Kathleen) Donley of Bend, Ore., John P. Mayak married to the former Bridget Infantino of Somerset, Mrs. Allen (Lu Ann) Otto of Somerset, Miss Amy L. Mayak of Somerset, 10 grandchildren: Colleen, Michael Jr., Brian and Lauren Donley, Erin, Megan and Jared Mayak, Jennifer, Kayla and Alana Otto. Brother of Mrs. Mary Sauer of Yonkers, N.Y.; Mrs. Christine Polenik of Alverda; Andrew Mayak of Stoystown; Sam Mayak of St. Petersburg, Fla.; Joseph Mayak of Maple Heights, Ohio; Mrs. William (Margaret) Pietlo of Longview, Wash.; Mrs. Joann Sarver of St. Thomas; Mrs. Paul (Helen) Mauger of Cleveland, Ohio; Frank Mayak of Stoystown. A member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy and participated in the invasion of Normandy on the Cruiser USS Agusta [sic], UMWA Local of Hooversville, Jenner Rod and Gun Club, Laurel Ridge Sportsman's Association. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and hunter of the herb ginseng and a devoted Pittsburgh Steeler fan. Retired coal miner and retired clerk for DW Rhoads Co. and was a Somerset County Weather observer for the National Weather Service for 26 years. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home. Mass will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Somerset with the Monsignor Samuel J. Tomaselli celebrant. Vigil for the deceased at 3:45 p.m. Friday.
