McCULLOUGH Garrett County, Maryland Hon. John W. McCullough, of Friendsville, Md., former State Senator from Garrett County, died suddenly in the office of the Board of County Commissioners about 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 3, while addressing that body on a road matter for the Friendsville community. Death was due to a heart attack. He was 68 years old. He was pleading for the extension of a hard-surfaced road from the Blooming Rose section to the Pennsylvania State line near Markleysburg, when he suddenly collapsed. He was carried to the office of E. E. Friend, Register of Wills, and Dr. M. C. Hinebaugh called, who pronounced him dead. His son George and about 40 citizens of Friendsville who had come to Oakland to meet with the County Commissioners were with him at the time of his death. Mr. McCullough was chairman of the delegation. Mr. McCullough was born on July 16, 1863, at Burnside, Clearfield County, Pa. In the schools of that county he received his education and afterwards took over his father's farm where he remained for some years. In the meantime he became interested in the lumber business and upon the building of the Confluence & Oakland Railroad, Mr. McCullough was among the first to be attracted by the possibilities of lumber manufacturing along the line of the new railway, and with Harry E. Clark a copartnership was formed and operations in the lumber business were carried on by them for many years. Later Mr. McCullough became interested in lumber plants in West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina and also in the local mining and shipping of coal, which latter business he was engaged in at Friendsville at the time of his death. In 1883 he was married to Miss Mary E. Lydick, of Indiana County, Pa., and to this union there were born nine children: Ford C., Harold W., Raymond O., John W., Jr. (who died several years ago), George, Iva McCullough Statler, Elma McCullough Friend, Maria McCullough Guard, and Claudine McCullough Friend, composing a congenial family living in Friendsville for over thirty years. He was trice a candidate for the State Senate on the Democratic ticket and was elected to this office in the fall of 1922, serving four years. He was a delegate to the National Democratic Convention in New York that nominated John W. Davis for President. As a citizen of the county he served on many commissions and committees. Mr. McCullough at the time of his death was a member of the Garrett County Board of Education, having been appointed by Governor Ritchie. Meyersdale Republican, February 12, 1931
