McTonic, 93, 209 Conemaugh Avenue, Jerome, died Nov. 9, 1995, at Somerset Hospital. Born Feb. 26, 1902, in Johnstown, son of Joseph and Mary (Zayac) Matonik. Preceded in death by parents; wife, the former Helen L. Shaffer, Oct. 18, 1991, ending a marriage union of 58 years; sisters: Ruth Matonik, Rose Lake and Anna Van Winkle; brother, Michael. Survived by these children: Phyllis, wife of Comfrey "Squire" Ickes, Boswell; William, married to Patricia Harmon, Jerome; Donald, married to Mary Ann McCune, Macomb, Ill.; and Patricia, wife of Glenn Roger Pritts, Rockwood RD 2; 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Brother of: John McTonic, Jerome; and William Patrick Matonik, married to Anna Balon, Johnstown; brother-in-law of Ethel McNutt, Arbutus Park Manor, Johnstown; also survived by very close friends: Donna (Keyser) Knipple; and Betty (Willison) St. Clair, long-time loyal member of the former Jerome Local1113 U.M.W.A. and Tire Hill Local 998 U.M.W.A. Also member of the Boswell Area Historical Society. Retired employee of the former Hillman Coal and Coke Co., Jerome, beginning June 21, 1922, as a coal loader and retiring after 32 years service. Also worked for Musselman Canning Corp., Biglersville; and for 12 years as a psychiatric aide at the Somerset State Hospital. Resident of Jerome for the past 75 years. Friends received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday and until the time of service at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Hoffman Funeral Home, Main Street, Boswell, the Rev. Homer E. Schrock officiating. Interment, Thomas Mennonite Cemetery. A tree will be planted as a living memorial to Mr. McTonic. Daily American, November 11, 1995 [M1003]
