McVicker, who was well and favorably known in Salisbury back during the latter "seventies" when he was learning the tinning trade in the shop of Salisbury's veteran tinsmith, the late Charles R. Haselbarth, died last Sunday in the Lee Hospital, Johnstown, Pa., at the age of 83 years. He was one of many who learned that trade from Mr. Hazelbarth during the many years he was in that business in Salisbury, before adding to it the hardware business. That was the beginning of Mr. McVicker's business career, which was one of far more than ordinary success. Mr. McVicker had been in the tinning business in Johnstown for more than 35 years, and headed the W. A. McVicker & Son Sheet Metal Works. Prior to locating in Johnstown he was engaged in the tinning business in Stoystown for many years and it was from there he came to Salisbury to learn tinsmithing. Mr. McVicker was born in Lavansville, September 20, 1856, a son of James and Mary McVicker. In recent years his son, Kenneth McVicker, had been doing a major part of the work in the business, but Mr. McVicker was associated with the partnership until the time of his death, and took an active interest in the work. His wife, Mrs. Elizabeth A. (Hoover) McVicker, was fatally injured in an automobile accident five years ago. He also was preceded in death by a son, Howard McVicker, and a daughter, Mrs. Ada Seigh. Surviving are his son, Kenneth, and a daughter, Martha, wife of Elmer Volkmann, Oakland, Cal. He also leaves two grandchildren and a brother, George McVicker of Windber. William A. McVicker was a member of Grove Avenue Methodist Church. Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon, at the McVicker home. The Rev. George R. Haden, pastor, officiated, and was assisted by the Rev. Hoag of Wilkinsburg, formerly pastor of the Moxham Church. Interment in Grandview Cemetery. Meyersdale Republican, February 15, 1940
