Merkel, 68, Fairhope, died Jan. 30, 1985, at Indiana Hospital, Indiana, Pa. Born July 20, 1916, in Fairhope, son of late George and Hulda (Richardson) Merkel. Survived by these children: Ben, and David Merkel, Mrs. Ritta Valentine and Mrs. Cheryl Salvo, all of Ohio; and Mrs. Clara Jean Kurcsics, Indiana, Pa.; and seven grandchildren. Also survived by three brothers, Victor, and Harry Merkel, both of Cumberland, Md., and John Merkel, Ohio; and four sisters, Mrs. Betty Huffman, Mrs. Alma Custer, Mrs. Jean Dietz and Mrs. Cheryl Emerick, all of Hyndman RD 1. Retired laborer. Served in U.S. Army during World War II. Member of Hyndman VFW, Oscar Jordan Post No. 7375, Kennells Mills Sportsmen's Club and Eagles Post No. 1801 of Somerset. Service at 11 a.m. Saturday at Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman, the Rev. Harry Ryan officiating. Interment, Comps Cemetery. Visitation from 7-9 p.m. Friday.
