He died on a small farm where he had lived for many years, which originally was a portion of the large and well known farm of the late Thomas Frost, about 6 miles east of Grantsville, Md., and about the same distance southeast of Salisbury, Pa. His death was caused by a stroke of paralysis, of which he had three, the first last July, the second about two months later, and the last on the day he died. He was born near Barton, Md., and is survived by his wife, whose maiden name was Annie Christena Bower, and by 14 out of 17 children, in the following order of their birth: Christopher, of Garrett County; Ernest, residing near Meyersdale; Elizabeth Katherine, wife of Harvey Brown, and Carrie, wife of Angus McKenzie, both of Salisbury; George O., at home; Godfrey, of West Salisbury; Charles, and Emma, wife of Harvey Winebrenner, of Garrett County; Philip, of Salisbury; Theodore, of Garrett County; Amelia, wife of Oscar Valentine, of Jerome, Pa.; Francis, at home; Elmira, wife of Andrew Messenger, of LaVale, Md.; Lydia, wife of Lloyd Butler, Salisbury, R.D.1. Surviving also are 50 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. The funeral was held at the family home, Sunday, April 13th, and was conducted by Rev. S. D. Sigler, pastor of the Salisbury and Greenville Lutheran Churches. The burial arrangements were in charge of William Winterberg, mortician, Grantsville, with burial on the Merrbach home farm. Mr. Merrbach was a very industrious man of kindly disposition, and many other good traits, also a kind husband and father, and had many friends. Meyersdale Republican, April 18, 1940
