Merrill, 81, died Dec. 30, 1982, at his winter home in Lake Worth, Fla. Born Jan. 25, 1901, at Garrett, Pa., son of the late W. A. and Alice (Judy) Merrill. Preceded in death by his brothers, Charles, Bryan and Harold, and his sister, Emma Shipley. Survived by his wife, Bernadine (Lehman) Merrill, daughter, Barbara Westgreen and granddaughter, Bridgitte of Laughlintown; daughter, Susan and grandson, Maximalian and granddaughter, Merri of Ligonier; daughter, Lynn Lupack and granddaughter Lawra of Texas. Howard, better known as Howdy, lived most of his life at Manor Hill in North Somerset, spending increasing periods each winter in West Palm Beach and later in Lake Worth, Fla. Most of his working life was in the coal business as president of Manor Hill Coal Company and director of W. A. Merrill and Sons Inc. He was a director of the First National Bank of Garrett, past superintendent and deacon of the Grace Reformed United Church of Christ of Garrett and ELT. 32nd AF&AM Shriners. He was an enthusiastic participant in sports, football, baseball and track during his school days, and in his senior year in both the Mercersburg Academy and Lehigh University, he was captain of the football teams.
