Merrill, 98, a resident of Star Route, Frostburg, MD, and formerly of Avilton, MD, died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 1990, at the Frostburg Community Hospital, MD. Born July 24, 1892, at Sutton, MD, she was a daughter of the late David M. and Elizabeth (Bonig) Pope. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse C. Merrill, on March 4, 1972. Also preceding her in death were one son, one grandson and one granddaughter. She was a member of the Cherry Grove Church of the Brethren for 75 years where she had been a deaconess and a member of the CBWF. She was a resident of the Goodwill Mennonite Home in Grantsville, MD, for seven and one half years prior to her death and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are one son, William H. Merrill, Grantsville, MD, two daughters, Mary D. Durst, Frostburg, MD; June Shill, Arleta, Calif.; nine grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, Md. Funeral services were conducted Thursday at 1 p.m. at Cherry Grove Church of the Brethren by the Rev. Steven Durr and Rev. Earl Harper. Interment, Grantsville Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons, Glenn Allen Durst, Lowell T. Merrill, Donald Lancaster, Leo Conway, Jesse Merrill and Jason Merrill. Honorary pallbearers were Harry Pope, Scott Pope, Wilfred Crowe, Ralph Fike and Floyd Ellinger. The Republic, August 23, 1990 [M1143]
