Dickerhoof, of 716 North Center Street, Cumberland, Md. Details of the accident are confused, one report stating that the child darted from the pavement directly in the path of the approaching car, while others claim that Dickerhoof was operating the car at an excessive rate of speed. The Dickerhoof car was occupied by three other Cumberland people. After the accident the Constable at Wellersburg is said to have arrested Dickerhoof and then discharged him when he was not positive as to whether or not he had the authority to hold the man. Citizens of the town, however, detained Dickerhoof until the arrival of Privates John R. Regna and Edward Snyder, of the State Police at Somerset. Dickerhoof was arrested by the officers and taken to the Somerset County jail to await developments in the case. Dickerhoof was released on bail today. He wrecked his car in trying to avoid hitting the child, who darted into the street in front of his car from behind a truck, he said. Coroner H. S. Kimmel was notified and will hold an inquest Friday morning. Meyersdale Republican, August 7, 1930
