Miller, 97, died November 9, 1981 in Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md. Born in Grantsville, Md. he was a son of the late Joel J. Miller and Savilla (Beachy) Miller. He was the last member of his immediate family. He was a member of the Springs, Mennonite Church. He graduated from Goshen, Ind., College and acquired his master's degree at Columbia University, New York City. After studying abroad, he taught in Garrett County public schools and later became superintendent of schools in Wakarusa, Ind. He taught one year at Ohio Wesleyan College and one year at the College of Wooster, Ohio. He then joined the faculty at Kent State University, where he taught one year before going overseas with a reconstruction unit of the Red Cross following World War I, in which he served in the rank of Captain. He belonged to the Mennonite Central Committee and was director of relief work in Russia. He later served as executive director of the Eastern Region of the National Conference of Christians and Jews. After returning to Kent State, he held the title of Professor of Principles of Education until his retirement, after which he substitute-taught at various universities. He devoted 76 years of his life to teaching. Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home. Services were conducted in the Maple Glen Mennonite Church by the Rev. Walter Otto and the Rev. Ivan J. Miller. Interment was in the Maple Glen Cemetery. The Republic, November 19, 1981 [M1392]
