He had been in poor health, but being an energetic and very successful casualty insurance agent for some years, stuck to his duties in his office until about two weeks before he died. A surgical operation was deemed to be the only course to pursue; but apparently the operation was performed too late, and death soon followed. Mr. Miller came to Salisbury some time during the year 1900, and established himself in the drug business in the building now occupied by William J. Diehl and family, and had associated with him in business a Mr. Shaler. The firm was known as Miller and Shaler, but was dissolved about a year later, when Mr. Miller became the sole owner, and not long thereafter he purchased the brick building on the southeast corner of Grant and Ord streets, which is now owned by Stanley M. Thomas, and used by him as a residence, and also for his undertaking business. He was a very energetic businessman, and did a very lucrative drug business, and later purchased two very good farms in Elk Lick Township, one at that time being known as the F. S. Bissel farm near Compton's Mill and the other at that time known as the Frank O. Livengood farm, near Boynton, the latter being underlayed with several seams of coal. Mr. Miller soon sold the Bissell farm, and had a tenant on his other farm. For a time he also operated several small coal mines, and was also engaged in the sawmilling business for about two years. In 1914 he sold his stock of drugs and fixtures to Daniel W. Livengood, in order to give more time to his other lines of business. Some of his investments later proved unprofitable and like many other businessmen he suffered heavy financial reverses, which caused him to leave here about the year 1926 and all his financial interests in this vicinity were disposed of to others. Mr. Miller also having had experience in the insurance business, decided to give that business his entire attention, and soon built up a lucrative business in that line. Since leaving here, he and Mrs. Miller have resided in Pittsburgh. However, before locating there, he and his family resided for some time at Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where they were among the victims of a tornado, floods which rendered many people homeless in some of the boom towns of that state. Mr. Miller is survived by his faithful wife, Mary (Sawhill) Miller, and four sons, namely, Edgar of Chicago; Darrel of Harrisburg, Pa.; George of Pittsburgh, and Darby of New York City. Deceased is also survived by two grandchildren and by two sisters who reside with their mother at Claysville, Washington County, Pa., where deceased was born and reared. Full funeral details seem to be unknown to any of the numerous persons in Salisbury who were numbered among the friends and acquaintances of Mr. Miller when he resided in Salisbury, and who always admired his pluck and energy, and for his refusal to consider himself beaten when financial loss and worries came to him. They only seem to know that his body reposed at the Miller home in Wilkinsburg, where he and Mrs. Miller resided at the time of his death, and that his burial took place at Claysville, last Monday.
